Vaccinations and Boosters

Providing clients with a high level of pet health care

Puppies

  • Puppies can be vaccinated from 6 weeks of age. The vaccination is given under the skin on the back of neck and most puppies don’t even notice the injection
  • This is followed 2-4 weeks later by a second vaccination
  • Puppies that have their first vaccination before they are eight weeks of age must wait until they 10 weeks of age for their second vaccination, so that the immunity the puppy has from their mother does not interfere with the vaccination

Boosters

  • If a booster vaccination lapses then the primary course (2 vaccinations 2-4 weeks apart) has to be re-started
  • A booster vaccination is required every 12 months – we send out reminders for these

Routine vaccinations

Dogs are routinely vaccinated against :

  • Distemper
  • Hepatitis
  • Parvovirus
  • Leptospirosis
  • The booster vaccination does not always contain all of these. Leptospirosis virus must be boostered every 12 months, but the others are given every 3 years

‘Kennel cough’ (Canine Infectious Rhinotracheitis) vaccine

  • This consists of Bordatella bronchiseptica  (a bacterium) and Parainfluenza virus
  • It is an intranasal vaccine – this means it is given down one nostril
  • This vaccine can be given from 6 weeks of age and lasts for 12 months
  • Many kennels quite rightly request that this vaccine is given before your dog can board with them. It must be given at least 3 weeks before going into kennels

Rabies vaccine

  • A rabies vaccine is required for any dog travelling on the Pet Travel Scheme
  • It can be given from 12 weeks of age (only one vaccination is required for the primary course)
  • A booster vaccination is given every 3 years in the United Kingdom
